iPhone 16 Plus price and expected release date

Every new iPhone since the iPhone 12 has been released in September, so the iPhone 16 Plus is expected to officially be unveiled in September 2024. There's no confirmation, of course, but a safe bet will be an Apple announcement on Tuesday, September 10 based on what we're used to seeing throughout. Those past years.

The iPhone 15 models kept the same pricing structure as the iPhone 14 models, with the exception of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which got rid of the 128GB option that was the base model of the iPhone 14 Pro Max. This means that the base model of the iPhone 15 Pro Max received a bumper price of $100.

However, an analysis of iPhone 15 models by Nikkei Asia found that the components inside the iPhone 15 models have increased significantly, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max using components that are approximately 10 percent more expensive than the iPhone 14 Pro Max. However, Apple has chosen not to pass these increased costs on to consumers.

With components in the iPhone 16 series expected to be more expensive once again, Apple may have no choice but to increase the prices of the iPhone 16 Plus. With rumors that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 UItra may also get larger displays, it makes sense for Apple to use this as justification for a price hike. Since the iPhone 15 starts at $799, and Apple is a fan of pricing that way, the iPhone 16 Plus could start at $900, which is the current price of the iPhone 15 Plus.

Design

There's not a lot of information about the overall design of the iPhone 16 Plus, but based on previous years, we expect to see the same flat design that has been the norm since the iPhone 12.

While the overall look may remain similar to current iPhones, there will likely be one noticeable difference. This is because after introducing the Action button to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple seems to have realized that its location may not be the most appropriate. Rumors suggest that a new button will be added on the right side of the iPhone 16 Plus, below the power button.

This button will reportedly be called the Capture button, but its exact purpose has not yet been revealed. Currently, the Action button can be used to launch the Camera app and take a photo or video while the app is open. The capture button can act as a trigger to capture photos, videos, or audio in certain apps like the camera app or voice memos app, freeing up the action button for other purposes.

Display

One important change in the iPhone 16 Plus is that we may see larger screen sizes. However, as analyst Ross Young revealed, these larger screen sizes will likely only appear on the iPhone 16 Pro models. The iPhone 16 will likely retain the current 6.1-inch screen size, with the iPhone 16 Plus getting a 6.8-inch screen. It also seems more likely that ProMotion will make its way to regular models, rather than keeping it stuck at 60Hz refresh rates.

But what may change for non-professional models is the introduction of micro-lens technology. This uses small reflectors inside the screen to direct light from the panel towards the screen, increasing brightness without requiring additional power consumption. However, this technology can also reduce the viewing angle, so it remains to be seen if Apple will sacrifice the viewing angle in order to boost the brightness level.

Internal gear and hardware

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus run on the same A16 Bionic chip that was used in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, with the Pro models running on the new A17 Pro chip built on a 3nm manufacturing architecture. According to analyst Jeff Pu, instead of the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus using the same A17 Pro chip found in the iPhone 15 Pro, all iPhone 16 models will run on the new A18-series chips.

Another big upgrade expected for the iPhone 16 Plus is an increase in RAM. According to some informed sources, all iPhone 16 series phones will be upgraded to 8GB of memory, which is a significant increase from the 6GB of RAM in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will not see an upgrade in the modem chip. While the Pro models will likely feature an upgraded model, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will use the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 16 Ultra. It remains to be seen whether the phones will retain Wi-Fi 6 support on the iPhone 15 models, or see an upgrade to the Wi-Fi 6E found on the iPhone 15 Pro and Ultra.

Another important rumored upgrade is the use of a graphene-based thermal system to fix the overheating issue that has plagued some iPhone 15 models.

Camera

There are not many details yet about the specifications of the cameras in the iPhone 16 Plus, but there is some information about how these cameras are arranged.

According to reports, the iPhone 16 Plus will return to the vertical dual-camera layout last seen on the iPhone 12, replacing the current diagonal layout. Why this is the case is not clear. It will be interesting to see if the design changes for a specific reason or if it is a purely aesthetic decision. However, if this change happens, it may force some other design changes around the device.

Battery

The iPhone 16 Plus may have a 4,415 mAh battery, which is a very small upgrade compared to the 4,383 mAh battery in the iPhone 15 Plus. This will translate into a battery life that is definitely outstanding and significantly better than before, supported by the extreme energy efficiency due to the internal chip, and the responsive software that makes the user experience smoother.

Regarding fast charging, we still have not seen a major upgrade unfortunately. It seems that we will have support for fast charging with a capacity of only 30 watts, while MagSafe wireless charging support will increase from 15 to 18 watts. It may not be the upgrade Apple users dream of, but it's better than nothing in the end, right?

Will the iPhone 16 Plus save users from purchasing high-end versions?

Will you have to buy the iPhone 16 Plus when it officially launches? Well, like most things in life, the answer is: this varies from user to user. If you already own an iPhone 15 Plus, there's little reason to upgrade.

However, if you're coming from an older generation and want more size and longer battery life, the iPhone 16 Plus, which may come in at $300 less than the price of the Ultra version, is definitely a bargain. If you're an Android user looking for a gateway into Apple's magical ecosystem, the iPhone 16 Plus could be a great choice to do so.
