Apple unveils iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max with 120Hz display and bigger batteries

Apple has officially unveiled four new phones in the iPhone 13 series, and among them are definitely two of the year's best phones: iPhone 13 Pro andiPhone 13 Pro Max, the best and most expensive phones of the series.

iPhone 13 comes with a 6.1-inch screen, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max is a giant 6.7-inch phone, and both come in a slightly larger size compared to last year's series.

The reason for this is the larger batteries, which is definitely a highly welcome feature of all users. The cameras on the back are getting bigger and phones now come with improved professional camera features.

All of this is powered by the Apple A15 Bionic processor in both phones, which is also present in all phones of the series, including iPhone 13 Mini.

So what's so special about the Pro versions in this series? How is it different from the rest of the series phones?

Prices and availability in the markets

iPhone 13 prices remain almost compatible with the same prices as last year's phones, and here is a list of prices for all versions of the two phones:

iPhone 13 Pro:

  • 128GB version at $1,000
  • 256GB version at $1100
  • 512GB version at $1300
  • 1TB version at $1500

iPhone 13 Pro Max:

  • 128GB version priced at $1100
  • 256GB version at $1200
  • 512GB version at $1,400
  • 1TB version at $1600

Design and colors

The new Pro phones come with almost the same design as last year's models: bezels and flat screens, the look is mostly unchanged except for a slightly thicker body, and if you look closely, you'll also notice that the notch has significantly decreased in size and is now 20% smaller.

The rest of the design details are quite familiar as the phones are made of tempered glass and feature a stainless steel frame, which adds a bit of extra weight compared to the aluminum standard and Mini version. Both phones also feature IP68 water and dust protection for added security.

Apple has also kept the more cheerful colors on the other two phones, while these two Pro models come in more subdued “Pro” colors. The user has four colors to choose from, and the hot new color is Sierra Blue which is lighter than blue. The other three colors are quite familiar as we have graphite, silver and gold.

ProMotion Display Finally Arrives!

The iPhone 13 Pro comes with a 6.1-inch OLED display, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max features a larger 6.7-inch OLED display.

Both look great and shine well in the sun, with peak brightness reaching 1,200 nits, up 25% over last year's phones.

But what is unique and new here is the 120Hz refresh rate support. Where this feature was available on Android phones in the middle and leading category during the past years, and finally, the awaited feature has now reached iPhones.

How it works is that it refreshes 120 times per second instead of 60 times (also known as 60 Hz). This results in a smooth user experience, but keep in mind that the display will automatically switch to a lower refresh rate when you have static content in order to conserve battery power and not drain it.

Apple says the screen adjusts the frame rate to precisely match the user's finger speed, and can range from 10Hz to 120Hz.

Internal hardware

The common feature of all four iPhone 13 series phones is the Apple A15 Bionic processor. This latest Apple chip features even more improvements and a revamp that has Apple ahead of all competitors when it comes to processing speeds and performance.

The A15 Bionic is built on a 5nm process and features more than 15 billion transistors and comes with a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU, one more GPU compared to the two standard versions.

Both phones come with 128GB of internal storage in the base version, but you can also opt for one of the more priced models: we also have a 256GB version, a 512GB version and, for the first time, a 1TB version for the most demanding users. As always with iPhones, there is no microSD card slot to expand the internal capacity.

Professional cameras are better than before

We have a triple rear camera and all those sensors got a noticeable upgrade.

  1. Main Sensor (Wide Lens) 12 MP, f/1.5
  2. 12 MP Ultra Wide Lens, f/1.8
  3. 12 MP telephoto sensor, f/2.8 aperture, x3 optical zoom

These cameras are certainly better than what you get in the two smaller phones, which justifies the price difference, as these cheaper phones get slower apertures for wide and ultra-wide cameras, in addition to the lack of a telephoto sensor.

Battery

Aside from the screen size difference, one of the most important reasons to prefer the iPhone 13 Pro Max over the 13 Pro is definitely the battery size. This year, Apple included larger batteries in all series phones, but the Pro Max got the biggest upgrade in battery size.

Although Apple does not disclose the battery capacity, it says that the iPhone 13 Pro offers an increase in battery life of 1.5 hours compared to the iPhone 12 Pro, while iPhone 13 Pro Max provides an increase of 2.5 hours compared to iPhone 12 Pro Max. This makes iPhone 13 Pro Max the only iPhone with the longest battery life ever!

In terms of fast charging, currently, Apple's fastest charger sells for 20W, all four new iPhones also support MagSafe wireless charging at speeds of up to 15W using compatible original chargers.
