Huawei has been in the habit of launching the flagship Mate series for a long time, and that series usually offers very good flagship phones. Unfortunately, the Chinese manufacturer was unable to release the Mate series last year due to US sanctions, but it is back this year with the Huawei Mate 50 series that was officially unveiled today.
We have three phones this year, which are Mate 50 and Mate 50 Pro and the Mate 50 RS. All three phones are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 Plus 4G chipset, support IP68 waterproof rating, 66W fast charging, 50W wireless charging, and Harmony OS 3.
Huawei has also outsmarted its competitors by announcing that the Mate 50 series supports satellite calling via China's Beidou system. This feature allows you to exchange all location-related information via satellite, although you cannot receive messages over this communication standard. So what else should you know about these phones?
Huawei Mate 50 Pro
The Mate 50 Pro comes with powerful specifications, such as a 6.74-inch OLED curved screen with FHD + quality and 120Hz refresh rate, the phone works on a 4700 mAh battery, 12 GB RAM with 256 or 512 GB internal storage, expandable by installing a card external memory.
In terms of the camera, the phone also has a 50-megapixel primary camera along with a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens and a 64-megapixel periscope telephoto camera that supports 3.5x optical zoom. We have a front camera consisting of a main sensor of 13 megapixels next to a 3D ToF sensor of 0.3 megapixels.
Interestingly, Huawei says that the version of the phone offers protection against water up to six meters under the surface of the water.
Huawei Mate 50
What about the standard version? Huawei also officially revealed the Mate 50. The phone comes with the same internal hardware as well, and IP68 protection against water and dust, but there are other compromises in the rest of the phone aspects in order for the price to be acceptable.
The phone comes with a 4,460mAh battery, which is slightly smaller than that of the Pro version. We also have a 6.7-inch OLED display that supports a refresh rate of 90Hz instead of 120Hz, although we're sure the switch to a flat screen would be welcome by many.
We have the same 50MP main camera and a 13MP ultra-wide lens, but in return we also get a 12MP telephoto sensor only. Finally, you also have a 13MP front camera, but there's no 3D sensor here.
Huawei Mate 50 phones price
The standard Mate 50 price starts at $718 for the basic 128GB version, while the Pro version starts at $977 for the 256GB model. Today's launch was for the Chinese domestic market only but the global release will follow shortly. However, there is no information on a timetable for a broader launch yet.
