With the launch of the premium Honor Magic 5 Pro at MWC 2023, the Chinese company has proven its ability to compete with the likes of Samsung and Apple when it comes to developing truly innovative mobile devices. The company's last mid-range phone at the end of a busy 2023 - the Honor 100 - represents a more ambitious attempt to pack the best features of the Magic 5 Pro but into a phone at a cheap and affordable price for everyone.
Bucking the trend, and in some cases, outperforming phones twice their price, is still something mid-range phones excel at greatly. Honor is not a newcomer in this field, but it is looking to create buzz in the technical world with this new phone.
We will embark together on a journey through this article, in which we will explore together the specifications and price of the Honor 100, the advantages and disadvantages of the most prominent Honor phone in the mid-range category for the year 2023, and everything related to the device that packs great specifications, in addition to a review and evaluation of the phone at the end of the article in order to determine the truth. If it is worth buying or not.
It's hard to talk about anything about the Honor 100 before touching on its most obvious feature, which is the gorgeous 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2664 x 1200 pixels.
It's clear from the moment you turn on the Honor 100 that this is where the majority of the phone's budget has been invested, and it's easily one of the best displays you'll find on a phone in this price range.
With the ability to reach 2,600 nits of peak brightness, the Honor 100's display is not only easy to look at outdoors, but it also has intense colors that make it well-suited for viewing videos and movies anytime, anywhere.
Since this thing has almost the same screen size as you'll find on iPhone 14 Pro MaxI expected a fair amount of weight, but the Honor 100 somehow manages to combat that, weighing in at just 183 grams. This made using the phone with one hand very easy, which is rare for a phone of this size, and made me feel like I wasn't being penalized for enjoying all the benefits of the larger-than-usual screen.
The only thing that detracts from the Honor 100's viewing experience is the fact that there's only one set of speakers at the bottom of the phone, and while it produces better sound than other phones I've used that follow a similar design choice, it pales in comparison to any Phones with dual speakers.
Unfortunately, the camera setup on the Honor 100 has also seen drastic changes. The new 50-megapixel main sensor is significantly lower than its 200-megapixel counterpart found in the Honor 90, and we still have the same 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, while the 2-megapixel depth camera we saw in the previous phone has been ditched from last year.
As with any mid-range smartphone, there is always one component that has been cut short in order to meet the affordable price point demanded by users in that price category, but with the Honor 100, performance is where the user experience starts to reach the limits and capabilities.
Under the hood, the Honor 100 has a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. Performance within the main apps is good enough, but the phone is a little slower than the Pixel 7a when it comes to scrolling and jumping between multiple apps open in the background. Then again, it's hard to know how much of that is down to the chipset or the phone's UI.
When you have a big screen like the one on the Honor 100, there's always going to be a worry that it will come at the expense of battery life, but thankfully, Honor has anticipated that by packing the phone with a massive 5,000 mAh battery. This has resulted in some outstanding battery performance that is sure to please anyone who picks up the phone for themselves.
The price of Honor 100 is $350 for the standard version 12 + 256 GB, $400 for the 16 + 256 GB version, while the top version 16 + 512 GB is priced for only $450. Available color options are black, white, blue and purple.
The phone was launched on November 23, 2023 and is available for purchase in Chinese markets through Honor official websiteAs soon as it is launched in global markets, we will undoubtedly provide you with the details.
After spending several weeks with the phone, I'm happy to say that I'm really impressed with what Honor has managed to achieve here. Not only is the pricing great, but this phone now offers one of the best viewing experiences you can find in this price category. Whether it's used to scroll through social media, read an e-book, or catch up on the latest TV shows, the screen can handle it all brilliantly, so if that's what matters most to you, it will pair very well with the Honor 100.
