The moment of truth has come: Apple announces iPhone 14 - the new member in the series iPhone 14 Plus

When it comes to Apple iPhones, there have never been more screen sizes than the series of iPhone 14. The average screen size of 6.08 inches for iPhone 13 models has now turned into 6.36 inches thanks to the unveiling of the first ultra-cheap phone with a large screen, the iPhone 14 Plus.

As usual, Apple also announced the iPhone 14 Pro with a 6.1-inch screen and the iPhone 14 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch screen.

Prices and release date

• iPhone 14 starting at $800, release date: September 16
• iPhone 14 Plus price starts at $900, release date: October 7

The iPhone 14 was widely expected to start at $799 for the 128GB model, while the iPhone 14 Plus would cost $899 for the same version, and the rumors were true. The 256GB models only cost $100 more, while the 512GB versions cost you $1099 and $1199, respectively.

Display

Whereas iPhone 14 has the same 6.1 inch screen as iPhone 13, the iPhone 14 Plus comes with a huge 6.7-inch screen and is the most notable newcomer to the series this year after several releases of the Mini model that were not widely accepted.

The Plus version has a slightly thinner bezel and a slightly taller aspect ratio and is the most interesting phone in the entire series due to its average price and nice big OLED display.

The iPhone 14 Plus is definitely a worthwhile phone in terms of its size and price, sure, as it is expected to be very popular given that Apple has misjudged the small compact phone market that users have long left for the big screen because they are better in every way and more. Attractive as well.

Apple keeps the same cumbersome design it's used for the past two years. This year's phone inherits the same narrow notch from the previous version, but that screen comes with better quality and a slightly higher aspect ratio. Don't expect anything but an aluminum frame surrounding a ceramic-coated glass panel on the front and back.

We have the same old button setup and the old Lightning port which doesn't allow super fast charging either, so you'll have to wait for the iPhone 15 to upgrade on that front. The colors of the two phones are: black, white, blue, purple, red.

Always-on Display mode can be a drain on the battery, so be careful, although we do have a bigger battery which should compensate for this feature's power draw.

Camera

iPhone 14 borrows some features from the camera of iPhone 13 Pro. So, Apple didn't leave us an unexciting camera on the base 2022 iPhones this year either. We have a 12MP main camera and another 12MP ultra-wide lens that's the same as the one in the iPhone 13 Pro, as well as a new 12MP front camera with autofocus.

The front camera support for auto focus is very nice, which is an important feature for Tik Tok users in particular and the rest of social media platforms, in fact this is the only new feature only in the phone, while the rest are components borrowed from the previous year’s phone.

iPhone 13 Pro, means bigger sensors and wider apertures that let in more light, so, overall, the iPhone 14 seems to come with a very excellent photographic experience.

Other than that, you can expect to capture the same stunning 4K video that has become Apple's trademark with all iPhones lately, as well as basic photography modes like Cinematic Mode and modes that were introduced with last year's phone.

Performance and internal hardware

Unfortunately, one of the biggest added features of the new iPhones - a faster chipset every time - won't be available on the iPhone 14. Apple assumed the A15 was fast enough to run iOS 16, record 4K video, or play 3D games on the low refresh rate for the screen, so we have the same chip as last year's phone for the first time.

We still have the same internal configuration that we saw on last year's models, 4GB RAM, 128GB up to 512GB internal storage.

Battery

Apple has included a larger 3,279 mAh battery in the iPhone 14, compared to the 3,227 mAh battery in the iPhone 13, and a large 4,325 mAh battery in the iPhone 14 Plus. These specifications weren't officially revealed, as usual, but they were leaked ahead of the announcement event, and Apple has just confirmed improved battery life for the new base iPhones, indirectly confirming that they have bigger batteries.

iPhone 13 Pro Max already has a long battery life, and iPhone 14 Plus battery life will set a record because it packs more battery-efficient chips and a lower pixel-dense screen with a record 60Hz refresh rate.

However, when it comes to fast charging capabilities, expect the same slow speed via the Lightning port that maxes out at 27W and takes a long time to charge, so charging the iPhone 14 Plus, in particular, will take a long time with the Apple mini charger. 20 watts that you have to buy separately if you don't already have one.
