Samsung unveils Galaxy S22 Ultra, which deals the final blow to Note phones

Samsung kicked off the excitement of early 2022 by launching the Galaxy S22 series that includes the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22 Plus, and Galaxy S22 Ultra. There is no doubt that the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the star of the show as it comes with many great specs including some that are appearing in Galaxy S series devices for the first time.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is considered not only the successor to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but it is also the successor to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra which was released in the year 2020 but did not get a successor yet. The highlight of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the presence of the S Pen, which is a popular accessory on the Galaxy Note series.

Galaxy S22 Ultra Specs

In terms of design, the Galaxy S22 Ultra adopts a design similar to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in that the front is flattened along with the top and bottom while the sides are curved. Samsung has even included a burgundy color variant similar to the bronze color option in Note 20.

The premium flagship phone uses an aluminum frame as well as Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Plus protection on the front and back sides. Incidentally, this is the first time a phone with Gorilla Glass Victus Plus has been released, confirming an earlier rumor that Samsung will be the first to use the new glass protection. The phone also comes with an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, and this includes the S Pen as well.

Another aspect in which the Galaxy S22 Ultra is expected to shine is the camera sector. The camera design abandons the large camera unit that we saw in last year’s phone instead, as the new phone comes with a simple design while retaining a set of sensors located in Galaxy S21 Ultra.

We have a 108MP main camera just like on the Galaxy S21 Ultra with a 12MP ultra-wide lens and two 10MP telephoto sensors that support optical zoom up to x3 and x10. There is also a 40MP front camera. A notable development in the camera sector is the introduction of AI optimization which in turn contributes to improving the quality of photos and videos in low light.

Some of the new features include auto framing which allows the ultra-wide camera to adjust the shot to fit the number of people in the frame. The camera also expands to accommodate more people if others join.

There is also the option to zoom in manually or just track one person in the group and the frame of the shot will be adjusted. There's also an improved Portrait mode effect, including a Night Portrait mode that starts automatically while shooting in low light.

As for the S Pen, it comes with an impressive latency of 2.8ms which makes it very responsive. It also integrates artificial intelligence based coordinate prediction technology. The phone also features support for handwriting-to-text features, which has been upgraded to support 88 languages.

In terms of display, the Galaxy S22 Ultra packs a 6.8-inch AMOLED 2X panel with 120Hz refresh rate, QHD+ resolution, and 3088 x 1440 pixels resolution. The screen also comes with a touch sensitivity rating of 240Hz, and a peak brightness of 1750 nits. There is also an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor built into the bottom of the screen.
