Design and display

The design of the mobile is very similar to the standard iPhone 12, other than being smaller. Both phones share a lot of specifications with the iPhone 11, and they also share that they come with flat edges like the old iPhone phones, but the aluminum structure, the square rear camera unit and the screen with the large notch in the middle are features taken from the iPhone 11.

Camera review and detailed specifications

It's a solid upgrade for those who want better video quality, even if that's no reason to buy this phone.

The front camera is another 12MP sensor, which is more than suitable for selfies and video calls. The quality is great, and Portrait mode works great thanks to the 3D depth sensor of Face ID.

Inner gear and performance

The size of the mobile may be small, but it certainly does not lack in power. It has the latest processor from Apple, the A14 Bionic.

The processor is the same processor that you will find in the other models that Apple launched in 2020, and it is the most powerful processor in any smartphone at all.

There's 4GB of RAM, and while that might not match the RAM capacity of many other manufacturers' flagship phones, we found that it didn't detract from the iPhone 12 mini at all. If you need more RAM, my Pro phone comes with 6GB of RAM, but for most people, 4GB is fine.

One problem that many can suffer from is the internal storage: you can choose between 64, 128 or 256 GB. If you need more, you will have to opt for the iPhone 12 Pro if you are a power user, which starts at 128GB and extends up to 512GB

The truth is, 64GB isn't a lot of space on a phone these days, and most people won't take long to fill it up with apps, photos, music, and other media.

We found that after just a week of loading the phone with apps and media, we're close to the limit, so you'll likely need more space if you don't want to see through a notification your storage is full at some point.

The phone comes with iOS 14.2 out of the box, so you have all the benefits of the latest version of the operating system from Apple, like the App Store and home screen widgets.

You should expect this phone to get updates at least for the next few years as well, as Apple keeps sending updates to users.

Battery

Apple has yet to confirm the exact battery size of the device, but sources inside the company indicate that the battery has a capacity of 2,227 mAh. As with the latest iPhone models, battery life has improved compared to older devices, but it still won't give you the best life compared to other competing phones.

We've found that the device will last a full day on a single charge, but in most cases you'll need to charge the phone at 10pm after a high day of use.

On a day of medium to high intensity use, we found the iPhone 12 mini made it to the end of the day with 22% remaining on battery capacity. That was 4 hours and 20 minutes of screen time, and a variety of tasks running in the background like playing music and using phone data for some time.

If you're always switching between a 5G and 4G connection, you'll likely see battery life drop because of that as well. We found on days when we were away from Wi-Fi that battery life drops faster.

Apple says the phone will last up to 15 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 are both capable of working for 11 hours, and these claims are accurate based on our tests, and they reflect how different battery life is between iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 eldest.

MagSafe Charger

Apple has improved its fast charging technology here on the phone, which means you can now get 20W fast charging. What does that really mean? We found that the iPhone 12 mini was able to charge from zero to 60% in just 30 minutes.

It's also important to note that our charging was with the Apple MagSafe charger. If you want to get the most out of these speeds, you'll need to purchase this charging kit if you don't already have it for $40.

This is part of Apple's mission to reduce electronic waste, so you only have a charging cable in the box. The problem is that the cable is USB-C to Lightning, which is a connector that many previous iPhone owners don't have, so you'll likely have to buy a charger to get the most out of wired charging.

But wireless charging is generally the best solution for charging a phone, and this generally worked well in our tests.

Using MagSafe Quick Charger. We found that the phone was able to charge 12% in half an hour.

This is slower than all the other iPhone 12 series phones. But that makes sense as the lower phone in the series.

You'll likely find that the battery life on the iPhone 12 mini is better than on an older iPhone like the iPhone 8, especially if you've been using an older phone for a few years, but that's not going to be the best battery life you can get from a smartphone.
